leaving the cape

From Weipa we headed south east via Coen, where we spent some time in their volunteer run museum, which was excellent. Then to Musgrave Roadhouse for a quick overnight stop where we met up with Pete and Kim again.
Instead of taking the normal route south, we found a little used track through New Dixie station down to Dunbar Station on the Burke Developmental Road. We asked about the condition of the track at Musgrave and discovered it had only been re-opened a few weeks ago. The track was narrow and overgrown in places, a bit dusty! and very remote.

We made camp that night in an awesome spot right on the banks of the Mitchell river where we met this snake.
Next morning Jo was answering the call of nature near the river, when she noticed a metre wide slide going into the water.......that was still wet.
From here we headed to Karumba Point and the first sealed highway for many thousands of kilometres. Karumba Point is known for it's sunsets and morning glory cloud formation. We didn't stay here, the only place to camp was a caravan park that was so cramped not only would you have heard the bloke next door fart, you would have smelt it too!
We found a great camp alongside the Carron River near Normanton.
