aborted take off number 2

Our cv joint eventually arrived Thursday arvo and was fitted Friday. All paid for by Toyota, even though we are just out of warranty. Good stuff.
We decided to take a drive to Copperlode dam up in the dividing range, both for the awesome view over Cairns, and to test the car. As we approached the summit, a long steep and twisty drive (think Chum creek Rd, but steeper) we first heard a grinding noise, then felt a long brake pedal.....then no brakes. Or phone service. I suspected a loose wheel bearing.
Cutting a long, and scary story short, the cause was a collapsed wheel bearing. The mechanic, Rodney, admitted to using a 3/4 drive rattle gun instead of Toyotas preference of a torque wrench, thus overtightening the bearing. Anyway, with no bearings in Cairns we prepared for another few nights in Gods waiting room, Lake Placid caravan park.
Rodney was good enough to admit the error and pay for the replacement hub. He even offered to put us up at his house and lend us the work ute for the weekend.
